Ferrofluid / Iron Oxide Nanoparticles Mediated from Plant Materials as a Probable Raw material for Sustainable Aviation Fuel: Pragmatic Based Review, Research Study Evaluation and Prospective

The agenda of the United Nations[1] (under the Sustainable Development Goal[2]) ,the international Energy Agency[3]  , International Civil Aviation Organization amongst other climate change focused organizations are tailored towards addressing the global crisis of climate change mitigation (i.e., depletion of the [4]ozone layer due to the adverse effect of carbon emission activities which has proven to be pungent, lethal, non-degradable[5] with zero socio-economic relevance) which is solely in line with the  Paris Club Agreement  objective towards the aim of curtailing the adverse effect of climate change[6].This research / commentary article inculcated  reviews of  various literatures for biojet-mediated feedstocks which are instrumental for the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), marginal output for the production process,  supply chain,  return on investments  (ROI), global usage of  SAF, production methodology, scientific mixing equations, blending ratio (According to ASTM Standard), feasible investigation , ascertainment of the possibility of synthesizing green iron oxide nanoparticles[7] from plant-based materials and their utilization as a prospective sustainable aviation fuel ferrofluid [8] product, upon blending with bio jet fuel[9]  for aircraft and aerospace operations. The Sustainable aviation fuel have a low carbon footprint which makes them highly economically considered to uphold the 2050 decarbonization goal of IEA and UNSDG (IEA, 2021) (United Nations, 2024). Furthermore, SAF as defined / explained by ICAO is a form of alternative fuel (aviation) which has the ability to achieve net Green House Gas Emission reduction on a life cycle basis / routine with respect to the areas of high importance for biodiversity, conservation and benefit for people co-existing within the ecosystem, in accordance with international and National standard regulation with a sole aim of gross contribution to socio-economic development.  (United States Energy Information Administration, 2024). From the research review study, relevant data from various authors were obtained, collated and evaluated. The research study enabled new data to be generated and caliberated in various physical parameters which included exajoules. The data obtained from the review of literature was succinctly compared, discussed and evaluated with the new generated data from the research laboratory bench work, on the use of plant biomass[10] and solid municipal-based materials for producing sustainable aviation fuel (Bergero, 2024). Quotably, their result analysis stated that “19.8 exajoules of SAF” was sustainably required for the aviation industry to attain net zero carbon free emission in the year 2050.it was further stated that a minimum of “3 exajoules of SAF” is substantial to cater for the aviation industry need for a whole year with a marginal market demand increasing from 1 - 4 percentage for flight operations. Analyzed data generated from this research study illustrated that the synthesized ferrofluid from plant source using WK[11] samples have the capability to supply 2.5 - 8 exajoules, approximately 3 - 8 megajoules and 1.5 - 7 Megahertz of energy. The ferrofluid synthesized from LGNPs[12] showed that the plant material has the capability to supply 2.5 - 7 exajoules of energy. Further aviation related investigation on other green materials can substantiatively help to check their suitability as a raw material for producing SAF.

[1] UN –   United Nations (A well-defined diplomatic and political international organization, with the long-term initiative to maintain / Uphold international peace and security, strategize amiable relations among nations, foster international collaboration and serve as a center or platform for the unification of national objective. (United Nations, 2024)

[2] SDG – Sustainable Developmental Goal is an established initiative of the United Nations under the year 2030 agenda for sustainable development. The 2030 agenda was developed and curated in 2015, the 2030 agenda of the United Nations has 17 Sustainable Development Goals, with over 169 linked targets which are all aimed at stimulating action over the next 15 years in socio-economic areas of critical importance for the peaceful co-existence of the planet and humanity. The Sustainable Development Goals are integrated and indivisible such that they balance the three dimensions of Sustainable Development which are the Economic, social and environmental cause. ((IAEA), 2023)

[3] IEA –   The IEA is explained as the International Energy Agency which is an intergovernmental organization which is committed to advancing the security of energy supply, environmental sustainability and economic growth. (IEA, 2021)

[4] Ozone Layer – A designated region of the earth stratosphere which absorbs an appreciable quota of the sun’s ultraviolet radiation. an abundant concentration of ozone () is present in the ozone layer when compared to other parts of the atmosphere and meagre when compared to other gases present in the stratosphere. (Wikipedia & Nsae, 2024)

[6] The Paris Agreement - The Paris club Agreement unifies different nations of the world to support a global cause to implement constructive strides to mitigate climate related issues and adjust to its feedbacks with fortified support to help under developed and developing countries, in a bid to strategize new course in the global climate effort. (UNFCCC, 2024)

[7] Ferrofluid -   The term “Ferrofluid” is utilized to explain a special class of magnetic fluids. The ferrofluid is a produced or manufactured fluids consisting of dispersion or suspension of magnetized nanoparticles in a variety or diverse of non-magnetic fluid or liquid carriers. The ferrofluids are stabilized against any form, of agglomeration or coagulation by the inculcation or introduction of a surfactant monolayer onto the particle. (Sebastian, 2020)

[8] SAF – The Sustainable Aviation Fuel is prominently known for its contribution to the reduction of greenhouse gas and carbon pollutant emission. Furthermore, the Sustainable Aviation Fuel commonly known as “SAF” is defined as a biojet fuel which utilizes a proportion of sustainable feedstock, green material or biomass in place or substitute of conventional crude oil (fossil fuel) feedstocks for manufacture. (Air Bp, 2024)

[9] Bio-jet Fuel - This is defined as a fluidic substance which undergoes a combustion process to produce heat energy when burnt in oxygen.  (byjus, 2024)

[10] Biomass - This is defined as a biological, plant or feedstock material which serves as a raw material for the synthesis or production of SAF. From an Energy production perspective, materials or matter obtained from recently existing (but now obsolete) organisms which serves as raw materials for bioenergy production. (United States Energy Information Administration, 2024)
