Effects of Selected Pre-treatment Methods on the Hydration Behaviour of Rattan-Cement Mixtures

Abstract The influence of calcium chloride (CaCl2 ), magnesium chloride (MgCl2), hot-and cold-water pre-treatments, and prolonged storage on the hydration behaviour of particles extracted from Calamus deerratus and Laccosperma secundiflorum rattan canes mixed with cement was investigated. While the untreated rattans inhibited cement setting, pre-treatments generally improved compatibility. The addition of chemical additives and aqueous pre-treatments enhanced the compatibility of the rattan-...

Preliminary Design of an Automated White Board Cleaner

ABSTRACT The work presented in this paper is on the preliminary design and fabrication of an automated whiteboard cleaner. The objective here in is to reduce the man-power involved in cleaning white boards after use. Though the use of smart boards is increasing, many institutions in the developed and developing world still make use of white boards. The Autodesk software was used for the CAD drawing and thereafter the design analyses and fabrication were done. The auto-board was designed to be...

PREDICTION OF CENTRAL LOCATION OF THE STATE WITH IRREGULAR BOUNDARY

ABSTRACT Mathematics has diverse applications as decision making tool. This study investigated the use of a proposed pure mathematical formulation (is. excluding human factor) for citing appropriately the location of political capital city an inhabited designated area.

Development of a Materials Requirements Planning (MRP) Software

ABSTRACT Lack of affordable, efficient, and user friendly inventory management tools, for adequate planning has been identified as a major cause of the high inventory cost in many Nigerian manufacturing firms. This study focuses on the development of a Materials Requirements Planning (MRP) that can be used by the local industries for inventory management in a job shop manufacturing environment. Four types of lotsizing techniques were analyzed and MRP algorithms developed for each of these lot...

Modeling of Tool Wear Parameters in High-Pressure Coolant Assisted Turning of Titanium Alloy Ti-6Al-4V Using Artificial Neural Networks.

ABSTRACT Titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) can be economically machined with high-pressure coolant (HPC) supply. In this study, an artificial neural network (ANN) model was developed for the analysis and prediction of tool wear parameters when machining Ti-6Al-4V alloy with conventional flow and high-pressure coolant flow, up to 203 bar. Machining trials were conducted at different cutting conditions for both rough and finish turning operations with uncoated carbide (K10 grade) and double TiAlN/TiN,...

The Status of Greenhouses Utilization in Oyo State, Nigeria

ABSTRACT The toll of climate change on the Nigerian agricultural system in recent times has resulted in the decline of agricultural production constituting a threat to food security. There is therefore an urgent need for strategies to reverse the situation and greenhouse farming is contemplated as a possible option. Towards the successful adoption of this strategy, a survey was conducted using Oyo State as a case study to establish the present status of the use of greenhouses in the region. A...

INFLUENCE OF MOISTURE ON SOME ENGINEERING PROPERTIES OF BUSH MANGO SPECIES’ [Irvingia gabonensis AND Irvingia wombolu (HOOK, F.)] SEED AND KERNEL

ABSTRACT Irvingia gabonensis and Irvingia wombolu are species of bush mango commonly found in Africa whose kernel are processed into soup. Literature generally abounds on the nutritional composition of the fruits and kernel but there is dearth of information on the engineering properties which are very important in the design of processing equipment and machines. This study was designed to investigate the influence of moisture on some engineering properties of seeds and kernels of I. gabonen...

DETERMINATION OF MODULI OF ELASTICITY AND RUPTURE AND ENERGY CONSUMPTION OF THE OIL PALM TRUNK

ABSTRACT The moduli of elasticity and rupture and the energy to cause failure under impact load of the oil palm trunk were determined.

Effect of processing method on the quality of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) flour for akara preparation

Abstract Cowpeas were prepared into flour by wet dehulling, wet milling into paste and drying; wet dehulling, drying and milling; and wet dehulling, wet milling and foam mat drying. Proximate chemical composition and functional properties (water and fat absorption capacities, foaming capacity, foam stability, bulk density, gelation capacity and emulsification capacity) of flours and of paste prepared by wet dehulling, wet milling and no drying, were determined. Akara from fresh paste and pas...

A Correlation to Predict the Viscosity of Light Crude Oilp

ABSTRACT Direct viscosity measurements are often expensive or unavailable. Therefore, empirical correlations are often used for predicting the viscosity of crude oils. However, several published correlations are either too simplistic or too complex for routine operational use, Many of the common correlations in use were developed using data from other regions of the world, Empirical correlations for predicting the viscosity of light crude oils in the Niger Delta have been presented in this pa...

Application of Neurofuzzy in the Development of Road Bump Designs

ABSTRACT This contribution is on the development of a neurofuzzy model that aids in capturing imprecision and uncertainty in the. various road bump parameters. Road bumps are structures built on roads to act as obstructions to vehicles plying these roads. The neurofuzzy methodology is used to check the vehicle speeds to acceptable standards. Particular use is made of neurofuzzy since it is an improvement on the traditional model proposed earlier in the literature. The work is motivated by the...

Construction and characterizations of solar energy water heater

Abstract Humans have been harnessing solar energy for thousands of years—to grow crops, stay warm, and dry foods. According to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, “more energy from the sun falls on the earth in one hour than is used by everyone in the world in one year.” Today, we use the sun’s rays in many ways—to heat homes and businesses, to warm water, or power devices. Solar, or photovoltaic (PV), cells are made from silicon or other materials that transform sunlight dir...

DEVELOPING A MONITORING SYSTEM FOR EARLY DETECTION OF LPG LEAKAGES FOR GAS FILLING STATIONS IN GHANA

Abstract Following the dreadful gas explosion at Atomic Junction, Accra-Ghana in the year 2017[2], the innocent public and owners of gas filling stations across the country continue to face fear in managing Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) filling stations. Gas explosions have caused loss of precious lives and huge economic loss to owners of gas filling stations and the government. In the past four years, the rate of fire explosion in Ghana has plummeted steadily and if measures are not put in p...

DESIGNING A LOW-COST SOLUTION FOR GUITARISTS IN GHANA WHO CANNOT AFFORD TO IMPORT EFFECT PEDALS

Abstract Music is a very important part of the Ghanaian society and it serves many purposes. In more recent times, the guitar has been one of the most widely used melodic instruments in music production. With the invention of the effect pedal, guitarists worldwide have been able to use a wider variety of tones to produce more complex and enjoyable music. In Ghana, however, these pedals need to be imported and this prevents a lot of guitarists from having a lot of tones to choose from which im...

AN ALTERNATIVE TO THE MANUAL COWPEA SORTING PROCESS

Abstract Cowpea traders find the manual sorting process of cowpeas laborious and time-consuming. Based on the volume of cowpeas and the proportion of damaged cowpeas, the process can span a time interval of about 6 hours. This project integrates the power of computer vision and convolutional neural networks to develop a solution for the cowpea trader to effectively segregate good cowpeas from the damaged ones.
