ABSTRACT An experimental study of the passive cooling of a building using longwave night sky radiation in Owerri, Nigeria is presented. The experimental rig consists of a standard (3.0 x 3.0 x 2.5m) room, flat plate sky radiator, heat exchanger, storage tank, water pump, interconnecting pipes and another standard room to act as control for the experiment. This test rig is a rectangular building made from 15.24cm hollow blocks. It has two windows located in the east and the south facing wa...

Evaluation of Otamiri River, Nworie River and Borehole Water as Sources of Municipal Water Supply System

ABSTRACT The quality of water from Otamiri River, Nworie River and Bore hole water as sources of municipal water supply system in Owerri has been evaluated by analyzing samples of raw water collected from Otamiri River and Nworie River and comparing them with selected borehole and treated water samples. Some selected borehole water analyses were carried out for their physiochemical parameters, major ions, nutrients and bacteriological quality. The obtained values from the analysis are:- A...

DESIGN, MODELLING AND SIMULATION OF CRUDE OIL DISTILLATION PLANT

ABSTRACT This research presents a flexible design model and robust algorithm for simulation of a crude oil plant which consists of a main column with several side strippers and pumparounds. The model is developed in commercial software HYSYS, Pro/II and Aspen Plus, in order to evaluate the performance of the simulation of these models on personal computers. The development of the mathematical model of the equipments of the unit is based on the relations that are presented in the equilibri...

Effect of Cement Particle Size on the Compressive Strength and Other Physiochemical Properties of Portland Cement

ABSTRACT The effect of cement particle size of Portland cement on the properties of cement mortar and paste were investigated. This was done at a definite mix and water-cement ratio. Fresh clinkers collected from Dangote Cement Factory was ground together with 3% gypsum using disc grinder. The chemical compositions of the clinker and gypsum were determined using XRF. Five different sieve sizes comprising (212, 180, 90, 63, 45) m were used to characterize the cement sample finen...

Data Mining for Inventory Control for Blessed Superstores Limited: A Pilot Study

ABSTRACT As the nation’s economy has tightened, managers of retail businesses have been greatly challenged in recent years to become more strategic in their planning. These managers need fast, reliable and interpretable analysis of different transaction data in order to effectively assess the performance of their business organizations. The introduction of computerized Point-of-Sale terminals has made it possible for retailers to easily accumulate large stores of sales data. This wealth...

Multicomponent Adsorption Models and the Kinetics of Deodourisation of Commercial DPK

ABSTRACT The Multicomponent adsorption models and kinetics of deodorization of commercial kerosene (DPK) using conventional and non-conventional adsorbents have been investigated. The adsorbents used were bone char, limestone, silica gel and clay. The influence of contact time, adsorbent mass, pH, temperature, and adsorbent particle size on the rate percent aromatic and sulphur removal was evaluated. The experimental results were fitted to the Langmuir, Freundlich, Redlich-Peterson, Radke...

Extruding Characteristics of FUTO Fabricated Extruder

ABSTRACT Optimum working condition for the FUTO fabricated extruder was established. The effect of screw speed on the viscoelastic property (die swell), sensory characteristic (hardness) and mechanical properties (modulus, ultimate strength and %elongation at break) of NNPC Polyolefin blends (HDPE/PP) were investigated. Screw speed had no effect on the mechanical properties of the unblended samples. Lower speed was found to favour co-blending of HDPE and PP. Maximization of tensile mo...

Assessing the Flow Characteristics of Amanyi Stream for a Small Scale HydroPower Development

ABSTRACT The study assessed the flow characteristics of Amanyi stream for a mini hydro power development for Neke Uno, Isi-Uzo Local Government Area of Enugu State, Nigeria. The stream has a maximum flow discharge, Qmax of 8.5m3/s, average discharge, Qav of 6.9m3/s, minimum dependable discharge, Qmin of 4.21m3/s and a selected design discharge Qd of 6.37m3/s. Topographic survey and plant layout showed a head of 3.63m (low head) which is possible for power generation. It was also determine...

Torsional Analysis of Box Culvert Using Vlasov's Theory

ABSTRACT The traditional method, De Saint-Venant theory which was used in the previous analysis of thin-walled structures assumed free warping of all thin-walled structures, which is very rare in engineering. In this research work, Vlasov’s torsion theory which incorporates restraint warping was employed in the analysis of box culvert. The incorporation of restraint warping by Vlasov made the equation for computing angle of twist extremely rigorous as compared to Saint Venant’s equati...

Effect of Paramagnetism on the Corrosion Abatement of Mild Steel

ABSTRACT The corrosion rates of magnetized mild steel coupons in HCl solutions were studied using the weight loss method. The coupons were magnetized with a laboratory electromagnet at 0.38T, 0.57T, 0.76T, 0.95T and 1.51T and immersed in HCl solutions of pH ranging from 2 to 6. Experimental results showed that coupons magnetized at 0.76T, 0.57T and 0.38T exhibited higher corrosion rates than their non-magnetized counterparts at pH values less than 5. At pH 5 and above however, they showed...

Design of a Plant for the Production of Potable Water from Sea Water (Desalination Process)

ABSTRACT The Mass and Energy Balance requirements for the production of potable water quality starting from sea water are presented. On the basis of economics of the process, a twenty (20) stage flash (MSF) plant analysis is presented for the production of 1,500m3 of potable water from sea water as required. The overall analysis seems attractive. The design of the nine pre treatment units and product storage tank are also presented. The quantitative block diagram as presented shows the m...

Design and Implementation of an Expert System (AUTODOC) for Medical Diagnosis

ABSTRACT This project is the design of an automated expert system (Auto Doc) for medical diagnosis preferably used in remote areas of the society. This AutoDoc is an intelligent system for diagnosing ailments for different patients and prescribes drugs. It has the tendency to advice patients for further medical checkup if need be. The system is gender and age sensitive and it is developed and implemented using VISUAL BASIC.NET. This project is designed and implemented with a group of inte...

Effects of Some Printing Variables on the Colour Yield of Reactive Dye Printed Cotton Fabric

ABSTRACT This thesis presents the findings of the investigation on the effects of some printing variables on the colour yield of reactive dye printed cotton fabric. The main print variables investigated are squeegee strokes, print paste viscosity, paste storage time and superimposed print. The printing pastes, (pastes A, B and C) used in this work were prepared using cassava starch, NaCl, NaOH and Procion reactive dye (Procion M); and were of different viscosities. The printing operation ...

Effect of Electrode Types on the Solidification Cracking Susceptibility of Austenitic Stainless Steel Weldment

ABSTRACT The effect of electrode types on the solidification cracking susceptibility of austenitic stainless steel weld metal was studied. The work also investigated the effect of electrode types on the strain hardening exponent of austenitic stainless steel welded joints. Manual metal arc welding method was used to produce the joints with the tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding serving as the control. Tensile tests and metallography of the joints were carried out using standard techniqu...

Mathematical Models for Sandbag Checkdam

ABSTRACT The study was aimed at developing mathematical models on the hydraulic performance of Sandbags as Checkdam for erosion control. Pilot studies were carried out at two sites. Site ‘A’ was a natural gully at a location in Ezinihitte-Mbaise, Imo State while site ‘B’ was an artificial channel excavated on the slope of Otamiri River at Federal University of Technology, Owerri. Artificial runoff was simulated into site ‘B’ by pumping water from Otamiri River. Sandbags of var...
