Investigating Challenges Of Consecutive Interpreting: A Case Of My Love Film

ABSTRACT

This study investigated the challenges of consecutive interpreting in My Love film, interpreted from English into Swahili. It, specifically, sought to identify challenges of consecutive interpreting in My Love film and to find out the impacts of the challenges of consecutive interpreting in My Love film from one language to another. The researcher, first watched My Love film thoroughly and then identified eighteen strings. The study employed 55 respondents as its sample size and used correlation qualitative design to compare the source text and target text and content analysis study by judging and identifying strings with the challenges and their impacts. The study used non-probability and probability sampling as well as simple random sampling technique in the sampling exercise. Data were collected through documentary review, questionnaires and interviews. The findings of the study revealed three things. First, it was discovered that there were challenges of consecutive interpreting including knowledge competence and experience challenges, linguistic and cultural competence challenges as well as challenges related to psychological activities. Second, it was, further, found that there were impacts related the above mentioned challenges. These were: misinterpretation, over-interpretation, under-interpretation and inconsistent impacts.
