An Appraisal of Human Resource Training Programme in University of Nigeria, Nsukka

ABSTRACT The work is on the critical re-appraisal of staff training programme in University of Nigeria Nsukka. Specifically, it examined the types of existing training programmes, the beneficiaries, the utilization of trained staff in the University, and the effect of these on the worker’s performance in the institution. To guide the work, four hypotheses were formulated. Questionnaire were administered to a sample of 280 staff, drawn from two cadres of staff population. Some management offices of the institution were interviewed. Relevant civil and other personnel records were studied and analysed. The system model approach was adopted for the analysis of the problem under investigation. Where necessary, simple percentage tables, weighted mean and rank order were used to present and analyse the data gathered. Inferences were also made from the content analysis of secondary data collected. The study revealed that there is maximum willingness expressed for training by staff for development. Only few staff of the University have benefited from the identified training programmes therein. There is little attention and inadequate co-ordination in staff training with only emphasis on teaching and few top administrative staff. Based on the above findings, some recommendations were proffered towards not only improving the staff training situation but also establishing a more central administrative and co-ordinating environment to match with organizational and individual objectives in the University.
