Effective Communication And Organizational Performance: A Case Study of Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN)

ABSTRACT

Attempt to conduct a study of this nature was predicated on the need to determine the impact of effective communication on the organizational performance of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN). It is important to emphasize the fact that communication plays a vital role towards the achievement of organizational objective but this objective can only be achieved when there is enabling environment for both the staff and management of any given organization. After review of relevant literatures, the cybernetic approach was adopted as a theoretical framework since communication in PHCN combined both the human and machine methods through the use of Power Line Carrier (PLC), Radios (HF and VHF), Optic Fiber System, Public Telephone Network (NITEL Telephone services), and GSM Network. For the purpose of research methodology, field survey method was used in conjunction with secondary data. The sample size consists of 400 questionnaires aclministered to PHCN staff selected from the seven departments in Abuja corporate Headquarter Office in conjunction with 10 principal Officers slated for personal interview. Tables and simple percentage were used to analyze the collected data from face-to-face interview and administered questionnaires while chi-square was adopted to test the hypotheses. On the whole, a relationship was established between effective communication and organizational performance. In the case of PHCN, the communication process was considered ineffective due to some extraneous factors such as the vandalisation of the power line facilities, political interference, one-way medium of communication and legalistic/formalistic communication process. By implications, the performance of PHCN as an organization left much to. be desired. Therefore, the researcher recommended the complete privatization of PHCN as the sole panacea to the incessant problem of epileptic power supply in Nigeria.
