Sulphate removal from acid rock drainage using steel slag

Abstract: The removal of sulphates from acid rock drainage (ARD) using basic oxygen furnace (BOF) slag was investigated. The results indicated that sulphates removal using BOF- slag increased with temperature increase (25-45oC), time (0-24 h) and solid loading (2-12 g BOF-slag/50 ml ARD). The maximum sulphate removal was 65% when 12 g BOF-slag/100 ml ARD was used at 45oC and 24 h residence time. Adsorption followed the Langmuir isotherm with maximum adsorption capacities at 25, 35 and 45oC o...

Tribological and microstructural investigation of hybrid AA8011/ZrB2-Si3N4 nanomaterials for service life improvement

Abstract: The effect of ZrB2-Si3N4 particle reinforcement on the tribological behavior and microstructure of AA8011 alloy has been studied. ZrB2-Si3N4 particles were varied from 0 wt% to 20 wt% with an interval of 5 wt%. Dry sliding pin-on-disc tests at a room temperature condition were conducted to investigate the wear performances of the aluminium alloy/ ZrB2-Si3N4 composites. The tests were conducted at varying loads, from 20 to 40 N. The results depicted that the wear rates of th...

Case-based reasoning system for prediction of fuel consumption by haulage trucks in open–pit mines

Abstract: The shovel-truck system is commonly used in open-pit mining operations. Truck haulage cost constitutes about 26% of open-pit mining costs as the trucks are mostly powered by diesel whose cost is escalating annually. Therefore, reducing fuel consumption could lead to a significant decrease in overall mining costs. Various methods have been proposed to improve fuel efficiency in open-pit mines. Case-based reasoning (CBR) can be used to estimate fuel consumption by haulage trucks. In ...

Development of available transfer capability enhancement using intelligent genetic algorithm for IEEE bus system

Abstract: Improving Available Transfer Capability is an important issue in the deregulated power systems. The Available Transfer Capability of a transmission network is the transfer capabilities of a transmission network for the transfer of power for further commercial activity, over and above already committed usage. It is a proven fact that Flexible Alternating Current Transmission System technology can control voltage magnitude, phase angle, and circuit reactance. Therefore, it is importa...

Structural and morphological dataset for rfsputtered WC-Co thin films using synchrotron radiation methods

Abstract: Control and manipulation of synthesis parameters of thin film coatings is of critical concern in determination of material properties and performance. Structural and morphological properties of rf-sputtered WC-Co thin films deposited under varying deposition parameters namely, substrate temperature and rf power are presented in this data article. The surface morphology, crystallite size and nature were acquired using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Grazing Incidence X-ra...

Crashworthiness response of natural silk-fibre glass hybrid reinforced epoxy cylindrical composite tubes under quasi-static load

Abstract: This study investigated the failure behaviour, energy absorption response and load carrying capability of fibre-glass (FG)/natural silk fibre (NS)/epoxy hybrid composite cylindrical tubes subjected to an axial quasi-static compression test. The reinforced cylindrical composite tubes were prepared using mandrel assisted hand lay-up technique. The specimen tested were three (3) fibre-glass cylindrical tube, each consisting of 5 layers of (FG); three (3) natural-silk fibre cylindrical...

Multiband reconfigurable antennas for 5G wireless and CubeSat applications: a review

Abstract: The rapid development of wireless technology has sparked interest in multi-band reconfigurable antennas as devices and satellites are innovating toward miniaturization. With limited space, reliable and efficient high bandwidth antenna systems are needed for current and next-generation wireless technology as well as for the revolutionary small satellites. The fifth generation of mobile communication technology promises high data rates, low latency and good spectrum efficiency. O...

Design simulation and analysis of a unified power flow conditioner for transmission line

Abstract: The reactive power compensation in power system is done by using different Flexible AC Transmission Controllers (FACTS). Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) is simulated and analyzed to observe its overall functions when integrated into a transmission line. It is installed in electric transmission lines hence assisting in the controlling and manipulating of the power flowing in the lines to give out reliable, controlled and efficient electricity to an ordinary consumer. The modell...

Structural, optical and electrical properties of undoped and co-doped Al/Ga ZnO thin films by spray pyrolysis

Abstract: Zinc oxide (ZnO) is a naturally occurring n-type semiconductor which is viewed as a promising candidate to replace indium tin oxide (ITO) in opto-electric applications, owing to its natural abundance and a wide bandgap (3.37). Synthesis of ZnO thin films via chemical spray pyrolysis technique is more convenient and cost effective compared to the mostly used deposition techniques such as magnetron sputtering which are highly expensive. Chemical spray pyrolysis provide easier way of ...

Meteorological influence on eLoran accuracy

Abstract: Stringent accuracy requirements need to be met for eLoran deployment in marine navigation and harbour entrance and approach. A good accuracy model is therefore required to predict the positioning accuracy at the user’s receiver locations. Accuracy depends on the variations of additional secondary factors (ASFs) and the primary factor delay. The changes in the air refractive index caused variations in the primary factor (PF) delay of the eLoran signal, and current eLoran accuracy ...

Modeling, simulation and energy management of solar PV-based Microgrinds using real-time residential data

Abstract: The research aims at defining and analyzing an energy solution that incorporates renewable energy, thereby giving rise to improving energy security and providing grid stability for the grid networks located in urban residential areas. The urbanization growth in Botswana coincides with the increase in electricity consumption. The electricity load demand in the country outlasts the local supply and thereby the need for importing electricity from the Southern Africa Power Pool (S...

Spectrum handoff in cognitive radio based smart grid network

Abstract: The Smart Grid (SG) as an intelligent power network, depends on a reliable and efficient communication network to provide two-way communication, which is a prime feature of the smart grid. Many researchers have proposed cognitive radio (CR) as a viable wireless communication technology that can be adapted for smart grid communication in order to improve spectrum utilisation and address communication challenges being faced by conventional wireless communication technologies. A major...

Optimum Course Association Method with Cloud Service Orchestration

Abstract: Negotiations in Cloud, Optimal path planning, Cloud Service orchestration Finest Trail Setup Technique in Cloud Ambience[1] proposes a fuzzy logic based SVM approach to secure a collision free path avoiding multiple dynamic obstacles. The navigator consists of an FSVM -Based Collision Avoidance. The decisions are taken at each step for the providers & consumers to negotiate without collision. Fuzzy-SVM rule bases are built, which requires simple evaluation data based on the active ...

Turbulent flow inside longitudinally corrugated pipes

Abstract: Longitudinally corrugated pipes can be described as pipes with periodically converging-diverging cross-area arranged along the flow course. These pipes are mainly utilized in engineering applications, for example, pipe flow in a heat exchanger where wall corrugation improves heat convection, gas to liquid contractors in the chemical business, ventilation, air conditioning, drag reduction and mass transfer efficiency. Both experimental and analytical works detailed the impact of c...

Electroosmosis modulated peristaltic biorheological flow through an asymmetric microchannel: mathematical model

Abstract: A theoretical study is presented of peristaltic hydrodynamics of an aqueous electrolytic non-Newtonian Jeffrey bio-rheological fluid through an asymmetric microchannel under an applied axial electric field. An analytical approach is adopted to obtain the closed form solution for velocity, volumetric flow, pressure difference and stream function. The analysis is also restricted under the low Reynolds number assumption (Stokes flow) and lubrication theory approximations (large wavele...
