THE USE OF PEDOMETER TO MONITOR THE LEVEL OF ACTIVITY AMONG MALE UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS OF OLABISI ONABANJO UNIVERSITY

Pedometers are increasingly being used as a surveillance tool to objectively assess ambulatory (walking) activity levels and patterns in different populations. This research therefore aims to monitor the level of activity using a pedometer among the male undergraduate students of Olabisi Onabanjo University, Sagamu, South west, Nigeria.


Pedometer was used to evaluate the amount of physical activities of the subjects. Pedometers were connected to participants. The age of the subjects was recorded in the questionnaire. The respondent’s height, weight and steps were recorded on the pedometer before physical exercise began. The exercise level was evaluated for seven days.


Result of this research showed that showed that 67% of the male students were highly active, 20% moderately active, and 13% were found to be inactive.


In conclusion, results obtained from this research showed that majority of the respondents have a very active lifestyle while few were inactive. This is evident from the result obtained on the pedometer.
