ABSTRACT

This study focused on women participation and success of government

development projects in Mbale municipality, Mbale district, Uganda.

Three specific objectives were based on to collect data, these included;

to find out how women participation in government projects has led to

success of government projects in Mbaie municipality, to assess the

challenges women face while participating in government projects in

Mbale municipality-Mbale district and to come up with solutions to the

challenges women face while participating in government projects in

Mbale municipality. The researcher employed both descriptive and

exploratory research designs. A sample size of 100 respondents was

used to collect information.

Findings of the study showed that women participation has led to the

increase in accountability and transparency in the implementation of

government projects which has led to their success, in addition,

effective communication is also promoted, decision making process is

also enhanced and women leadership in some of the projects was

greatly appreciation. This is because there has been considerable

government commitment and activity led by women’s agencies in

Mbale municipality which are designed to promote the participation of

women in leadership and decision-making roles. Therefore, there could

be an opportunity loss of not involving women in implementation of

government projects. The study therefore recommends that there is a

need for affirmative action and gender rnainstreaming for enhancing

women’s participation in implementation of government projects. This

is so for me because the study was convinced that, women’s

empowerment for participation entails a process of struggle at both

personal and collective levels. r~sing women in positions of power

will be one way of influencing clhe:r ~amen to take up challenging

positions in leadership, and hence building confidence and motivation
