The proximate analyses revealed that the flower head contain 3% moisture, 11.5% Ash, 3% crude lipid, 3.5% crude protein, 25% crude fibre and 57% carbohydrate. The mineral anal...

Antioxidative Properties of Sida Coryembosa in Ethanol

In Africa traditional studies have shown that herbal medicine proves to be one of the best forms of treatment mensure to preventing or managing a disease condition. Sida coryembosa is a plant gotten from the eastern part of Nigeria Nnewe north to be precise and certain claims and attributes has been said about the plant in wound healing and a possible treatment to peptic ulcer as a result of oxidative stress. The roots, stems and leaves were used for the research. 100grams of each was weighed...

Phytochemical Constituents and in vitro antioxidant activity of the stem bark and oil extract of Allanblackia floribunda plant

ABSTRACT This study focused on the comparative study of the phytochemical constituents, in vitro antioxidant activity of the stem bark and seed oil extracts of Allanblackia floribunda. The phytochemical screening revealed that both extracts contain flavonoids, tannins, cardiac glycosides, alkaloids and saponins while terpenoids are absent in the stem bark extract but present in the seed oil extracts. However, the quantitative studies showed that proanthocyanidin, total phenol, total tannins ...

In vitro ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY AND PHYTOCHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF METHANOL, ETHANOL AND HEXANE EXTRACTS OF Azadirachta indica LEAVES.

ABSTRACT Azadirachta indica, commonly known as Neem, has attracted worldwide prominence in recent years as a cynosure of modern medicine owing to its wide range of medicinal properties. This study was carried out to investigate the phytochemical properties and antioxidant activity of the multi-solvent (methanol, ethanol and hexane) extracts of the leaves of Azadirachta indica of Meliaceae family. The extracts were investigated for phytochemical constituents such as tannins, saponins, alkaloid...

Phytochemical Screening and Proximate Analysis of Aloe Vera Growing on Highland and Lowland Areas of Sokoto Metropolis

ABSTRACT Phytochemical and Proximate analyses of two samples of Aloe vera from variable habitats (highland and lowland) of Sokoto metropolis were accessed. Phytochemical and proximate compositions of highland sample were 8.16mg/100g of Saponin, 3.40mg/100g of Glycoside, 1.80mg/100g of Alkaloid and 2.50mg/100g of Anthraquinone. Proximate constituents’ analysis revealed 6% of Moisture, 10.5% of Ash, 2.5% of Crude lipid, 8.13% of Crude protein, 1% of Crude fibre and 70.57% of Carbohydrate resp...

Neuroprotective Effect of Croton Zambesicus Phenolic Extract on Synaptosomes of Rats Exposed to Environmental Toxicant

ABSTRACT Exposure to environmental toxicant was known to cause neuronal disorders in humans. Hence, the present study evaluates the toxic effect of leachate (an environmental toxicant) in the synaptosomes of female rats and the reversal effect of phenolic-rich fraction from Croton zambesicus. Fifty animals were divided into five groups. Group I (Control) received 0.5ml of distilled water only, Group II (non-withdrawal) received 0.5ml of leachate for 14 weeks, Group III (withdrawal) received 0...

EFFECTS OF CHRYSOPHYLLUM ALBIDUM VARIETIES ON SELECTED BIOCHEMICAL PARAMETERS USING ALBINO WISTAR RAT

Effect of Chrysophyllum albidum pulp varieties on biochemical parameters was investigated using albino rat model. Thirty male Albino rats were divided into five groups of six rats each. A group served as the control while four groups served as the test groups A, B, C and D. Test groups A and B were placed on 5% and 25% respectively compounded feed of  sweet Chrysophyllum albidum pulp variety while test groups C and D were respectively placed on 5% and 25% compounded feed of sour Chrysophyllu...

REVIEW: BETA LACTAM ANTIBIOTIC DRUG RESISTANCE

The class of β-lactam antibiotics has  antibiotic agents that possess β-lactam ring as part of their molecular structure, these agents includes cephalosporins, monobactams, penicillins   and carbapenems. these are the most widely used antibiotics which act by inhibiting the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall such activity leads to the lysis and death of the bacteria. due to the wide applications of these antibiotics bacteria have developed resistance mechanism against these antibiotics...

Goitrogenic content of some selected nigerian leafy vegetables

The goitrogenic potential of a plant or food depends upon the amount of active goitrogen present in it. Various procedures like soaking, washing, boiling and cooking can help in reducing the goitrogenic potency of these foods. These, along with the intake of iodide supplements are generally practiced in areas where goitrogenic foods are routinely consumed. In this experiment, goitrogenic contents of some commonly consumed vegetables were assayed and analysed.

Protein Disulfide Isomerase

The folding protein (and protein folder) is beset with a number of problems in translating the simple instructions encoded by DNA into the complex, three-dimensional structure of a correctly folded protein. Nature has solved these problems in an adequate, if not elegant, fashion, but we are just beginning to understand the variety of strategies that cells use to ensure efficient protein folding. This minireview will focus on several of the more general principles of assisted folding using the...

Ethanolic extract of Jatropha gossypifolia exacerbates Potassium Bromate-induced clastogenicity, hepatotoxicity, and lipid peroxidation in rats

Extracts  of  J.  gossypifolia  L.  have  been  reported  to  have  several  medicinal  values,  including potential  anti-cancer  and  anti-inflammatory  properties.  In  this  study,  we  investigated  the  anti-clastogenic and  hepatoprotective,  effects  of  the  ethanolic  leaf  extract  of  J.  gossypifolia  L.  in  potassium  bromate (KBrO3)-induced  toxicity  in  rats.  The  general  trend  of  the  results  indicates  significant  increases  (p

Brain, lung, and heart oxidative stress assessment of an overthe-counter pyrethroid insecticide product in Nigeria

We  evaluated  the  brain,  lung,  and  heart  oxidative  stress  in  rats  exposed  to  aerosol  of  an  over-thecounter  pyrethroid  insecticide  product  in  Nigeria.  The  experimental  animals  were  randomly  divided  into  four  groups: group  I  (control)  was  not  exposed  to  the  insecticide  aerosol,  while  groups  II,  III,  and  IV  were  exposed  to  6.0  mL  m-3, 12.0  mL  m-3,  and  18  mL  m-3  of  insecticide  ae...

Potential Genotoxicity, Hematotoxicity and Clastogenicity of Three Commonly Consumed Polyherbal Formulations in Abeokuta South-West Nigeria

Background:  The  current  upsurge  in  the  use  of  polyherbal  remedies  and  coupled  with  loose  regulation  on  public access  to  these  products  underscore  research  efforts  to  evaluate  their  biochemical  effect,  noting  also  that  many  of  the polyherbal  medicines  lack  scientific  evidence  to  support  their  medicinal  claims.  Objective:  We  therefore  investigated  the potential  genotoxicity,  hematotoxicity  and  ...
