ABSTRACT The floristic composition and the girth sizes of the woody plants in seventeen sample forest plots at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria were studied with a view to making recommendation on the conservation of the forest. The 120 species found are those typical of drier lowland forest of south Nigeria. Twenty-six species occurred in 8 of the 17 plots while 28 occurred in one plot and could be regarded as rare. About 70% of the stems are less than 30 cm girth at breast h...

ISOLATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF BIOOXIDIZING BACTERIA FROM THE OBUASI GOLD MINING SITE

ABSTRACT Processing o f gold arsenopyrite and sulphide ores is currently done with biooxidizing bacteria. This procedure is preferred because of its environmental friendliness and efficiency o f gold recovery from ores, compared to the conventional methods. The efficiency of biomining is, however, largely influenced by the origin o f biooxidizing bacteria used and local organisms have been found to be better adapted to extracting gold from the ore from which they were isolated. The work repor...

HUMAN METAPNEUMOVIRUS AND RESPIRATORY SYNCYTIAL VIRUSES IN GHANAIAN CHILDREN BELOW FIVE YEARS WITH ACUTE LOWER RESPIRATORY TRACT INFECTIONS IN ACCRA, GHANA

ABSTRACT Acute lower respiratory tract infection (ALRTI) in children under five years is predominantly cause by Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) but in recent times Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) has also been implicated in ALRTI. In Ghana, the few studies on ALRTI have focused on the prevalence of RSV and the viral etiological agents causing acute bronchiolitis, bronchopneumonia and pneumonia. This cross sectional study sought to detect, characterize and genotype respiratory syncytial virus ...

STABILISATION AND CHARACTERISATION OF A PEANUT BASED READY-TO-USE SUPPLEMENTARY FOOD (RUSF)

ABSTRACT The prevalence of under nutrition in many communities requires the need for the availability of nutrient dense affordable food supplements such as Ready-to-use supplementary foods. An energy dense, drinkable ready to use supplementary food produced by enzyme hydrolysis of cooked mixture of peanuts, cowpeas and rice with added vitamin mineral mix was both acceptable to consumers and showed promise of efficacy in improving the nutritional status of women of child bearing age through ...

WAVELENGTH MODULATION ABSORPTION SPECTROSCOPY WITH 2f SIGNAL DETECTION: APPLICATION TO MOLECULAR OXYGEN DETECTION

ABSTRACT Wavelength modulation spectroscopy using second harmonic (2f) signals is one of the modulation techniques in absorption spectroscopy used to improve the absorption signal by noise reduction. This second harmonic (2f) signal has been simulated using MATLAB, a new approach based on numerical integration, to investigate the influence of normalized modulation amplitude, m and the optimal 2f signal was found to occur at m = 2.1. Experimentally, free molecular oxygen gas was measured at th...

POPULATION GENETICS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF COWPEA ACCESSIONS (VIGNA UNGUICULATA (L) WALP) FROM THREE AGROECOLOGICAL ZONES OF GHANA BASED ON ISOZYME.

ABSTRACT Allozyme variation in protein encoded at 22 loci was studied in 9 cowpea accessions from three agroecological zones of Ghana (namely Deciduous forest, Guinea savannah and Sudan savannah) by electrophoresis. In addition, variation in thirteen morphological agronomic traits of the accessions were studied. The results indicated that: (i) 21 out of 22 loci were polymorphic (95.5%); (ii) cowpea accessions displayed average estimates of mean alleles per locus, A = 5.00; mean expected hete...

SPATIAL DIMENSIONS OF CARE FOR PEOPLE LIVING WITH HIV/AIDS IN NEW JUABEN AND MANYA KROBO DISTRICTS

ABSTRACT The study examined spatial dimensions of care for people living with HIV/AIDS in New Juaben and Manya Krobo Districts. Both qualitative and quantitative data were used. The research instruments included closed and open ended questionnaire as well as interview schedules and personal observation. High prevalence rate of HIV/AIDS, limited care centres, and lack of financial and logistical support as well as stigmatization and discrimination were the major problems that necessitated this...

A MATHEMATICAL MODEL FOR LENDING IN MICROFINANCE AND APPLICATIONS

ABSTRACT Loan default is one of the major problems facing most financial institutions. The solution to this problem has been the use of a mathematical model to determine the probability of default of clients of these financial institutions. This study proposes a mathematical model for predicting the probability of default of clients from a microfinance institution. The logistic and survival analysis methods were used in building the model. The results from the logistic regression model showed...

DEVELOPMENT OF DOAS REMOTE SENSING SYSTEM FOR GROUND-BASED MEASUREMENTS OF TRACE GAS EMISSIONS IN AN INDUSTRIAL AREA

ABSTRACT A DOAS system has been developed and deployed to determine horizontal concentrations of such pollutants as NO2, SO2 and O3 in Bologna, Italy and Tema, Ghana. Measurements were conducted in Italy during the winter season of March 2005 and in Ghana during the dry harmattan season in January 2008 and raining seasons in July and August 2008. Their average lineof-sight concentrations were determined by measuring the scattered solar radiation through three optical windows in the zenith and...

ANALYSIS OF FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE THE CHOICE OF SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL BY JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

ABSTRACT The objective of this study has been to determine the major underlying factors that influence the choice of senior high schools. To this end, a survey of 510 BECE candidates in Junior High Schools in Nungua, a community in Accra, was conducted. The students were asked to indicate their opinions on twenty seven variables on a five-point Likert scale. The data generated from the survey were multivariate in structure since 27 variables were recorded on 510 respondents. Factor analysis, ...

A FIBRE OPTICAL SYSTEM FOR REFLECTANCE MEASUREMENT OF PLANE SURFACES

ABSTRACT A simple fibre optical design for reflectance measurements of plane surfaces has been developed and tested. The reflectance system was standardized with a PF10-03-P01-Plane mirror. Average reflectance from the plane mirror was 99.7%, 99.5% and 70.0% for the 1310 nm, 850 nm LED sources and 632.8 nm He-Ne laser respectively. Average reflectance decreased with decreasing wavelength. Steel and aluminium metal plates showed different trends in average reflectance values. The microscope sl...
